An event counts by the point its source reports. A storm, a flood or a weather warning whose centre is farther than the distance you chose is not included, even when its edge reaches your place.
Coverage depends on the reporting agencies and the available data. Always follow official local emergency instructions.

Which events qualify for an email?

Each hazard uses its own threshold. Earthquakes use the magnitude reported by the agency. Other hazards use the Calamity Score or a high or critical severity classification.
